Since the beginning of mankind, Archangels have played a crucial role in salvation history. They’ve appeared as fearsome warriors fighting the devil, been companions on a traveler’s journey, and messengers of the good news of salvation! Nobody knows how many Archangels are are, but three are made known to us in Sacred Scripture: Michael, Raphael, and Gabriel. Today we celebrate St. Gabriel the Archangel!
St. Gabriel the Archangel is one of the most revered figures in Christian tradition, known for his significant role in delivering important messages from God to humans. According to sacred texts and religious stories, Gabriel’s appearances have been pivotal moments in salvation history.
In the Bible, Gabriel is prominently featured in the New Testament, where he plays a crucial role in foretelling the births of two very important figures: John the Baptist and Jesus Christ. The most famous account of Gabriel’s appearances is found in the Gospel of Luke, where he appears to the Virgin Mary to announce that she will conceive and give birth to Jesus, the Son of God. This moment, known as the Annunciation, is a central event in Christian theology, marking the beginning of Jesus’ earthly life and his mission of salvation.
Gabriel’s role as a messenger extends beyond the Annunciation. In the Book of Daniel in the Old Testament, Gabriel is described as interpreting visions and delivering prophecies to the prophet Daniel, providing guidance and understanding to God’s chosen people during times of uncertainty and hardship.
For nothing is impossible for God.
—St. Gabriel the Archangel (Luke 1:37)
Throughout history, St. Gabriel has been revered as a powerful intercessor and protector. Many believers turn to him for guidance, strength, and support in their own lives. He is particularly venerated as the patron saint of messengers, communication workers, diplomats, and postal workers, reflecting his role as a herald of God’s word and a bridge between heaven and earth.
Although angels are some of the most mysterious creatures in our Christian tradition, they’re at work in our everyday lives!
